Long-distance moving puts you under a little more pressure than when you just move across the same town. Everything has to be done right since it would be very inconvenient to go back to do something you forgot. It's helpful to get a moving checklist that has a timeline of the things you need to do and when to do them. You can often get a checklist like this from your moving company. Here are three more tips for long-distance moving.

1. Label Boxes And Make An Inventory

If you pack things yourself instead of letting the movers do it, be sure to mark each box with your name and the contents of the box. Pack your things room by room and also put the room on the outside of the box so you can locate items more easily when you're in your new home.

Careful labeling and a making a list of all your boxes and furniture are important since you'll be separated from your things for a long time and you may forget what is in each box. Long-distance moving is different from a local move where your things take up the whole truck.

You share space with other people on a long-distance moving truck, so your boxes need to be labeled in case one is separated from the rest of your things. Plus, if you have an inventory, you can check it as soon as your things are delivered so you know the mover didn't leave something on the truck.

2. Prepare To Live Without Your Things For A While

The long-distance moving company gives you an expected window for when your things will arrive at your house. Still, there might be weather delays. You'll probably arrive at your home much sooner and need to survive for a time without all of your possessions. This could go on for several days, so you'll need extra clothing and other personal items to get you through.

Fill a box or suitcases with what you need and keep the boxes with you rather than put them on the moving truck. That way, you'll have important things like clothes, a coffee maker, and eating utensils available to use while waiting for your other belongings to be delivered.

3. Get Rid Of Things You Don't Really Need

Moving is a great time to declutter and downsize. If you've accumulated a lot of things, packing will be more complicated if you want to take them all with you. Plus, if you pay for your move by weight, you'll pay more to take clutter along. If you plan to get new furniture anyway, leave your old furniture behind. Get rid of as much as you can so your move is easier and you might save money too.
